At the same time, there is an array of films that fall into the underrated movies category despite having good stories and performances for reasons ranging from lack of marketing and language to the inability of the audience to understand them at the time of their release. It is no secret that many films have become famous on the back of superstars, production value and deft marketing strategies. A reason behind this is that City of Angels starred two of the biggest superstars of the 1990s - Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. While the BAFTA winner is one of the highest-rated films of all time, it is City of Angels (1998), the critically panned English film inspired by it, that not only did better business but is widely known to date as well. And even if they managed to win over them, the ‘one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles’ - as the great South Korean director Bong Joon-ho famously remarked in 2020 - hampered Wings of Desire‘s reach. The reason is that the first two could not please critics or fans or both.

For instance, the high-octane action film Wheelman (2017), starring Frank Grillo, and the fantastical The Fountain (2006), in which Hugh Jackman plays a man on a quest for eternal life, are considered underrated films alongside the poignant German movie Wings of Desire (1987). Sometime, audiences find it difficult to connect with the characters that actors portray on screen, even though they have won laurels on the awards circuit for their powerful performances in the films. A still from Wings of Desire. This is because the former might still seem terrible if watched years after its release, which has more to do with, say, below-average performances by the cast, direction or script than with audiences’ or critics’ perception of the movie. Thus, it is important to note that the term ‘underrated’ does not necessarily include every movie that failed to garner appreciation from critics or did not do well at the box office.Īdditionally, what defines a ‘badly made’ movie is something very different from that of an ‘underrated’ film. One reason could be that when the film hit the theatres, society might not have been ready to understand its plot and themes, or that it was overshadowed by an equally excellent film that resonated more with audiences. And so what that role became for me and what that experience became for me was about watching Terry and learning from Terry because he has an utterly unique approach to how to make a movie in which the script is really something that's handed into the studio to get them to agree to give him the money to then go and make a movie which is really going to be written as he makes it, rather than using the script as a clear blueprint for what the movie will be. So because I had just directed my first film and was eager to direct my next one I just decided that I needed to leave my actor's ego at the door and try my best to embrace the experience as a film school. So you really never knew when you were going to be on set or when you were going to have a day off, when you were going to be on camera when you were going to be in the furthest reaches of the background. It became obvious early on that Terry had really brought a group of us over there to pull from and improvise on a daily basis what his movie was going to be. So many of us in that movie ended up barely being in the movie even though we spent five and a half months in Australia with Terrence Malick.
